GEOCHEMICAL DISCOVERIES OFFSHORE VENEZUELA AND TRINIDAD

In 1974 the Gulf Oil Company conducted a marine "sniffer" survey in offshore Trinidad over and adjacent to the SE Galeota field. The geochemical data suggested the presence of significant additional potential. All of the gas fields located to the east of the SE Galeota field were discovered after the geochemical anomalies were mapped.

In 1979 the R/V Hollis Hedberg was contracted to a Venezuelan oil company by the Gulf Oil Company to conduct an offshore seismic/geochemical survey. Following the field collection Gulf scientists provided processed geophysical sections highlighted by dissolved gas hydrocarbon anomalies. One of these processed geophysical/geochemical anomalies was drilled by the oil company, producing the first offshore oil discovery in the basin surveyed.
